Conference Keynote

“Observations and Challenges for the Future of CNS,” Dr. Nikos Fistas, (EUROCONTROL), Conference General Chair

Plenary Day 1: Global Harmonization

The first day’s plenary will provide regional updates on major modernization programs (NEXTGEN, SESAR, CARATS) around the world. The plenary will also focus on the results of ICAO’s 13th Air Navigation Conference “From Development to Implementation,” which encompassed implementation of operational improvements, such as technology, operational concepts, and road maps; and provided an opportunity for Member States and aviation stakeholders to work on global strategies for safety and air navigation planning, development and implementation, and to set priorities for the coming years.

Participants

  • Plenary Moderators & Introduction: Steve Bradford (FAA) and Michael Standar (SJU)
  • Outcome of the 13th ANC: Saulo Da Silva, ICAO
  • CARATS Update: Shuji Takahashi, Japan Civil Aviation Bureau
  • SESAR Update: Mariagrazia La Piscopia, SESAR Deployment Manager (SDM)
  • NextGen Update: Steve Bradford, FAA
  • The European SESAR Approach for the CNS Evolution: Emilien Robert, EUROCONTROL
  • Next and Beyond… Removing Innovation Barriers: Dennis Sawyer, MITRE
  • Airbus Perspective on Harmonization: Didier Delibes, Airbus
  • NextGen Flight Operations: Dr. Chip Meserole, Boeing

Wednesday, April 10, 2019

Conference Keynote

“Standards Development in the 21st Century,” Terry McVenes, President and CEO, RTCA

Plenary Day 2: CNS Standardization and Certification

Addresses the CNS standardization and certification developments as well as planning for the future. Among others the panelists will address what changes may be needed in the standardization and certification process and how better synergies between them can be obtained so that standards support and better facilitate the certification and eventual implementation of the new and more complex CNS systems in the future.

Participants

  • Plenary Moderator & Introduction: Stephen Van Trees, FAA
  • FAA Certification: Steve Van Trees,  FAA
  • Evolving Standards in a New Era: Al Secen, RTCA
  • ARINC Industry Activities – CNS Standardization: Paul Prisaznuk, ARINC

Plenary Day 3, Part 1: Future Communications Infrastructure Status

A panel of experts participating in future infrastructure design and development will provide status updates on ongoing work areas such as new technologies — including SATCOM, LDACS and AeroMACS and the internet protocol suite for aviation (ATN/IPS) — and will address spectrum usage and future plans.

Participants

  • Plenary Moderator & Introduction: Brent Phillips, FAA
  • Internet Protocol Suite for Aviation Communications: Aloke Roy, Honeywell
  • Aeromacs – Moving from Standards to Implementation: Declan Byrne, WiMAX Forum
  • LDACS – The FCI Air-Ground Link: Michael Schnell, German Aerospace Center (DLR)
  • Satcom Unlocks the Future of Datalink: Danny Bharj, Inmarsat
  • Iridium NEXT Update: Luke Sienkiewicz, Iridium
  • Spectrum Status: Donald Nellis, FAA

Plenary Day 3, Part 2: UAS – From Hype to Reality

Integrating unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into busy, complex airspace is no small feat. But everything from developing new standards and regulations, to “unmanned traffic management,” to the CNS infrastructure needed to support integration, all comes down to risk management. This panel of experts will address various aspects of UAS integration in the context of how we ultimately manage operational risk, and how CNS technologies can support these efforts.

Participants

  • Plenary Moderator & Setting the European Scene: Paul Bosman, EUROCONTROL
  • Plenary Moderator & U.S. Integration Efforts: Joe Morra, FAA
  • Recent Operational Integration Efforts and the Role of CNS Technology: Randy Willis, FAA
  • UAS Standards Development Efforts, Gaps, and Challenges: Jim McCabe, ANSI
  • The Malicious Intruders and the Airport Protection Challenge!: Manfred Mohr, IATA
  • U-SPACE, the Austrian Way from Myth to Reality: Guenter Tree, Austrocontrol
  • UTM in Context: Davis Hackenberg, NASA
